Nicaraguan President Closes Churches

After persecuting and censoring the traditional press, Nicaragua is now attacking Catholic radio stations and closes churches, in a campaign against the presence of the Church itself in the country.

Nicaragua’s Socialist president, Daniel Ortega, and his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, are moving toward near total control of the lives of Nicaraguans by repressing all dissenting voices, including in the Catholic Church.

Last month, the expulsion of nuns of the Missionaries of Charity Association, an order founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, shocked the world with the nuns being escorted by the police to leave the country on foot.

Ignoring the repercussion of the case, Nicaraguan authorities this week closed media outlets associated with the Catholic Church and invaded religious temples to seize broadcasting equipment.

In the last year, the government arrested 46 opponents and critics, sentencing them to prison terms of up to 13 years. Among the imprisoned opponents, seven were presidential hopefuls for the 2021 elections in which Ortega was re-elected for the fourth consecutive time.

As the president closes churches images of looting, churches being set on fire and destruction of church property have hit the internet. These actions according to the TikTok report below are being endorsed by the Government.
