According to Danish and Swedish Seismologists the Russian Nord Stream gas pipelines to Germany were definitely blown up. As NPR reported “it is very clear from the seismic record that these are blasts,” Björn Lund‬, director of the Swedish National Seismic Network at Uppsala University told NPR in a phone interview. “These are not earthquakes; they are not landslides underwater.”
Russian energy giant Gazprom, a state entity, owns a controlling interest in both pipelines.
German and Danish officials said both Nord Stream gas pipelines showed sudden losses of pressure late Monday.
Neither of the Nord Stream gas pipelines were active at the time, as Gazprom was still waiting on project certification for supply. The energy project, worth $11 billion, was finished in September 2021. Since then it has stood idle pending this certification by Germany and the European Union.
The two Nord Stream gas pipelines were meant to ease the pressure on European consumers facing record energy prices. However after Russia’s skirmish into Ukraine, Germany stopped the certification process in protest according to Reuters on 23 February 2022.
Just two weeks prior to Germany’s certification freeze, U.S. President Joe Biden warned that if Russia invaded Ukraine, there would be no Nord Stream 2. He did not specify how he would go about ensuring the controversial pipeline would not be used.
Speaking at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Biden said, “If Russia invades… again, then there will be longer Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.”
USA is already sending three quarters of its liquefied natural gas production to Europe.
While some reports are blaming Russia for the blast, the fact is that Russia could have just turn off supply their end. There is nothing to be gained in blowing up the pipeline. However with the blast the US has just shored up its European gas market.
Apparently Polish MP (Foreign Minister) took Bidens threat in February serious to post this on Twitter immediately after the reported explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines.
UPDATE: Since the first report there have been more news on both the damage to the Nord Stream gas pipelines and new reports of prior US military activity in the pipe damage zones.
There has been a total of 4 explosions reported on 3 Russian pipelines. The repairs could take years it has been claimed.
On September 27 The USS KEARSAGE, an amphibious assault ship, and a detachment of warships had been reported east and south of Bornholm, a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, east of Denmark (where the pipeline runs.) The USS KEARSAGE switched off its AIS tracking system there before later completing its journey to the North Sea.
Since the beginning of September suspicious anti-submarine helicopters of the US navy has also been observed in the area. In the past few days there has also been an escalation of reconnaissance aircraft in the Baltic Sea in particular a US Boeing E3 Century Reconnaissance aircraft and a US Point Stars over Germany and Poland. All of this fanning speculation indeed to US sabotage of the pipeline.
