Just days after the G5 meeting of world leaders in Bali in Indonesia, Western Java was hit by an magnitude 5.6 quake. The earthquake hit the district of Cianjur where the livelihoods of the people thrive around small and medium enterprises revolving around local wear and products.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) earlier published a number of 103 fatalities while regional governor Ridwan Kamil mentioned at least 162 people lost their lives. At least 390 others were injured. Damages to buildings and other structures is widespread. According to allquakes.com there has been the equivalent of 55 atomic bombs of energy released in the form of earthquakes over the past 7 days. Their estimate 3.7 x 1015 joules (1015 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 8.7 x 105 tons of TNT or 54.6 atomic bombs!) |

Other Significant Earthquakes over the past 7 days.

SOLOMON ISLANDS: There has been a 7.3 magnitude quake, 19 km off the Island of Malango and a number of smaller aftershocks above 5.0 reported from residents. No injuries or deaths had been reported, but people in the capital Honiara reported significant shaking and tremors for around 20 seconds.

TURKEY: A strong and shallow earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck northwestern Turkey near the town of Düzce this morning at 4.08 a.m. local time. According to preliminary information from local press, the tremor woke up thousands of people from their sleep and caused panic in the areas near the epicenter, where at least 22 people were injured as a result of the shaking and damages caused to buildings. There were no reports of fatalities, fortunately.

The quake was also widely felt in Turkey’s largest city of Istanbul, located about 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of the epicenter. Turkey’s disaster agency AFAD said there were controlled blackouts in the Duzce region and warned residents not to panic.

The quake occurred on one of (if not the) the most dangerous fault lines in the world, known as the North Anatolian Fault running through northern Turkey: here, the Anatolian micro-plate to the south that comprises most of Turkey’s landmass, is moving westward along the boundary with the Eurasian plate to the north. The motion amounts to 23-24 mm per year and occurs in distinct slips along individual sections of the the fault which is when quakes occur.

Earthquakes comparison this last 12 months to 10 years ago

Here is the data from 24th November 2011 to 24th November 2012.

  • 2 quakes above magnitude 8
  • 15 quakes between magnitude 7 and 8
  • 129 quakes between magnitude 6 and 7
  • 1786 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
  • 12137 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
  • 11303 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4

Ten years ago there was total of 25,372 quakes of magnitude 3 and above. While there were two quakes that registered above magnitude 8 it was still the same number overall of earthquakes above a magnitude 6 between then and now.

The alarming difference however, is in the overall number of quakes. There has been a 254% increase in the actual number of earthquakes around the globe this year.

Records show an increase in quakes above a magnitude 3, from 25,272 quakes in 2011-2012 to 64,466 quakes in 2021- 2022.
