Android Ameca went viral last December. The YouTube of Engineered Arts’ most recent creation, a gray-skinned android named ‘Ameca’ shocked viewers on the internet. People saw that the android Ameca was aware enough to establish a boundary with the researcher.
The video featured the android Ameca reacting to a researcher who was moving her index finger around in front of it from left to right. The android displayed human-like facial expressions as the eyes and head followed each movement.
However, when the researcher brought her finger up to touch the android Ameca’s nose, it took hold of her hand and gently pushed it aside and down from its face.
The shock for everyone present and those watching on social media was that the android had wanted to establish this boundary with the human researcher.
While this is a very human reaction it is not one you would expect or want from a programmed android. It is a self-preservation gesture that requires some level of self-awareness. Self-preservation is not a function you want in a mechanical servant.
‘Engineered Arts’ has plans to make android Ameca completely ambulatory.
